Copying a long-established fact of the smartphone industry. If a brand has a feature worth its price tag, other brands will find a way to adopt the same feature on their devices. It’s a tried-and-tested strategy. However, the strategy does rely on a brand coming up with its own slightly unique take. What happens when a brand doesn’t have such an idea yet, though? realme has a unique answer.
Following the successful and controversial launch of the iPhone 14 Pro’s Dynamic Island, realme has launched a contest for its fans. The contest involves a simple question: “What [if] realme UI added a software trick to turn the camera cutout into a multifunctional feature?”
Does that sound familiar? If not, the contest’s mechanics should give the game away. realme is asking its fans for “ideas on how a potential realme Island would look and work.” Three proposals — sent as a drawing, GIF, or text description — will make it to the brand’s social media platforms. Users will then vote on the best one. realme, exercising discretion, might use the top-voted idea for a future device.
Now, if you’re hoping for a grand prize, the contest’s announcement does not confirm anything. Its terms and conditions does indicate that an award is coming for the winner, though. However, the same list of terms carries a heavy bottom line: If you submit an entry, realme will have automatic permission to use your submission in any way it sees fit. Though the list focuses on marketing purposes, using a design for a product without the creator’s permission isn’t completely off the table.
That said, if you win, you might get the distinction of being an official Dynamic Island copycat.
